Solo Competitions & Performances

As part of her musical improvement, Sofia has taken part in a few competitions. Though not all were as successful, she is very glad to have won the 2nd Prize at the Prémio Jovens Músicos 2017 in the Senior Tuba Category. This is one of the most important competitions for young musicians in Portugal, being available to only a couple of instruments each year, so it was a great pleasure to have the tuba selected for the year 2017 and to have been part of this important event.

Sofia also took part in the International Competition Terras de La Salette 2016, Advanced Tuba Category, where she was awarded the 2nd Prize.

As she started her Bachelor’s degree, she was invited to perform the Ralph Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto with the Metropolitan Classical Orchestra, Lisbon. This was a great honour for Sofia, given that it was the orchestra from her previous school, and so many of the players had been her colleagues. It was a very exhilarating experience, although it was possibly one of the most stressful ones.

Sofia was also invited to perform the tuba arrangement by Walter Hilgers of the Tomaso Albinoni Oboe Concerto in D minor with the Symphonic Orchestra of the Academia de Amadores de Música, Lisbon, in 2016. This was a very interesting concert, in which she had the opportunity to play as a tuba soloist for the first time, and finished the concert performing Ravel’s Bolero playing percussion in the orchestra.

In the summer of 2019 Sofia performed the world Premier of Tanninim, by her father, Ivan Moody, at the Gravíssimo! Festival. This was due to an invitation from Sérgio Carolino, a very important and famous tuba player who is also a good friend, and who has commissioned a few pieces from her father and from many other portuguese composers, contributing to the expansion and improvement of the tuba repertoire.
